Background:
LL.M. Maria-Cristina Macocinschi graduated from Master’s Degree Programme in Law and Information Society (University of Turku) in 2015. She is currently a doctoral student in Information Privacy Law at the University of Turku, Faculty of Law.
Research focus in the project:
The commodification of personal data was advanced as a possible solution in correcting the existing information power asymmetries, between data subjects and data users. However, such a market oriented approach might prove to be a double-edged sword: while individuals might feel empowered feeling they have stronger control over their personal data, the information power discrepancies might also deepen in the favor of the companies. As a starting point, I will examine the implications of the propertization of personal data, digital identities and individual reputations in the context of E-commerce contracting. In order to achieve a more realistic perspective on this topic, I will compare the information privacy to the copyright model, another instance of information governance, in order to ascertain what the former can learn from the latter.
